The House

A historic stage in the heart of Sumter.

Sumter County Cultural Center · adjacent to Patriot Hall

The Sumter Little Theatre has been a cornerstone of the central South Carolina arts community for more than eight decades — the kind of intimate house where every seat feels close to the screen and every story lands.

Its proximity to the iconic Swan Lake Iris Gardens gives our festival its name, its mascot, and its spirit of grace and creative flight. A portion of festival proceeds supports the Sumter Little Theatre and the Sumter County Museum.

002 · A Theatre With Roots

Eighty-five years of telling Sumter's stories.

Organized in 1941 and chartered in 1949 as the Community Theatre, the company adopted the name Sumter Little Theatre in 1966 alongside its nonprofit status. In 1987, the theatre relocated to its current home at 14 Mood Avenue, inside the Sumter County Cultural Center — a campus shared with Patriot Hall and the Sumter County Gallery of Art.

Today, SLT stages a full annual season of plays and musicals, alongside year-round educational programming including youth theatre classes, after-school workshops, and a popular summer camp. Recent productions have ranged from Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire to Dolly Parton's 9 to 5: The Musical — a span that captures the breadth of what the company brings to the stage.

It's a working community theatre, governed by a board of trustees drawn from across Sumter's civic and creative life. We're honored to share its house for three nights each September.

The Setting

Where the festival finds its name.

Just a short drive from the theatre, Swan Lake Iris Gardens is one of the only public gardens in the country featuring all eight known species of swan, set across 150 acres of black-water cypress lake and seasonal iris bloom.

The theatre itself sits in the Sumter County Cultural Center alongside Patriot Hall and the Sumter County Gallery of Art — a few blocks from downtown's restaurants, the Sumter Opera House, and the historic Main Street district.
